Choosing a CMS in 2026: an honest comparison
WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Sanity or a custom build. Which one fits depends on questions most comparison articles never ask.

The right CMS depends less on features than on who is going to use it and how often. Ask three questions before you compare anything.
Who edits, and how technical are they? A marketing team publishing weekly needs different guardrails from a founder updating a page twice a year. Flexible systems punish infrequent users — every edit becomes a relearning exercise.
How structured is your content? If everything is one-off marketing pages, a visual builder is fine. If you have products, case studies, team members and posts that all repeat with fields, you want structured content and templates, or you will be rebuilding the same layout by hand forever.
Where does it need to go next? Content that only ever renders on one website can live anywhere. Content that also has to feed a mobile app, a partner API or a second site should live in a headless CMS from day one.
WordPress still wins on editor familiarity and ecosystem. Shopify wins if commerce is the business rather than a feature of it. Sanity and similar headless systems win on structure and multi-channel. A custom admin wins only when your content model is genuinely unusual — which is rarer than most clients think.
