Building offline-first for real connectivity

What we learned shipping software to users whose internet drops for hours, not seconds.

Most offline handling assumes a brief interruption — a tunnel, a lift, a dead spot. Design for a delivery driver on a six-hour route with no coverage and the assumptions break in specific ways.

Treat offline as the default state, not the error state. The app should open, load and function without asking. Connectivity becomes an enhancement that syncs, rather than a prerequisite that blocks.

Queue writes with intent, not just payloads. If a driver marks four deliveries complete and then edits one, syncing a raw list of API calls in order produces a mess. Store the user's intent and resolve it into the minimum set of operations at sync time.

Make sync state visible and boring. A small, permanent indicator showing 'synced' or '3 pending' builds more trust than an alert that fires on failure. People tolerate delay; they do not tolerate uncertainty about whether their work was saved.

Handle conflicts with a human in the loop for anything that matters. Last-write-wins is fine for a draft. It is not fine for an inventory count. Surface the conflict and let someone decide.
